About the role

We are offering a full-time permanent academic position for an emerging or established research leader in volcanology. The position is available at Lecturer (Grade 8) or Associate Professor (Grade 9) level, dependent on experience.

UCL Earth Sciences has a strong tradition of research in pure and applied volcanology. It hosts the UCL Hazard Centre which has long-established partnerships with global volcano observatories, the insurance and re-insurance sectors, and civil society. We also maintain strong links across the university with the Warning Research Centre, EPICentre for Resilience to Natural Hazards, and the Department of Disaster and Risk Reduction, and with the Natural History Museum of London. This expertise is supported by world class laboratory facilities in geochemistry, experimental petrology and rock physics, with experienced technical staff. We expect the successful applicant to embed themselves within this community and to realise their own ambitious r esearch programme by using or extending our facilities and developing collaborations across Departmental and university research groups.

We welcome applications from across the broad remit of physical, chemical and interdisciplinary volcanology, from the dynamics of magma transport and eruptive mechanisms, through volcano monitoring and forecasting volcanic behaviour, to the impact of volcanism on society, climate and the environment.

About you

The successful candidate will have extensive knowledge and expertise in any area of volcanology evidenced by a strong publication record in leading international research journals.

An ambitious experimental research vision that supports and enhances the scope of volcanology and natural hazard research in UCL Earth Sciences and evidence of obtaining external funding as PI to pursue research activities is essential.

For consideration at Associate Professor level candidates will have evidence of sustained research funding to support an independent research team from external sources as evidenced by the holding of research grants as principal investigator and
an outstanding international research profile with substantial and sustained contributions to knowledge or other outcomes appropriate to the discipline.

Our commitment to Equality, Diversity and Inclusion

As London’s Global University, we know diversity fosters creativity and innovation, and we want our community to represent the diversity of the world’s talent.

We are committed to equality of opportunity, to being fair and inclusive, and to being a place where we all belong. We therefore particularly encourage applications from candidates who are likely to be underrepresented in UCL’s workforce.

These include people from Black, Asian and ethnic minority backgrounds; disabled people; LGBTQI+ people; and for our Grade 9 and 10 roles, women.

Our department holds an Athena SWAN Bronze award, in recognition of our commitment to advancing gender equality.
