The College of Engineering, Design and Physical Sciences (CEDPS) offers a challenging but supportive environment, where excellence and enterprise are at the heart of everything we do. Together, we produce ground-breaking research and educational programmes that tackle and answer issues that affect all of society.

The position is part of the industrial research project, which focuses on virtual tire simulation control based on physical model for improving vehicle dynamic performance and the developed tire models aiming to significantly increase the tire limit boundary for the development of vehicle dynamic controller and advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS). The project will have the opportunity to test the developed tire model in a dedicated vehicle performance test area.

Working under the leadership of Dr Dong Zhang, you will be responsible for the day-to-day research tasks in accordance with the project plan.

This will include:

  • Research on the modelling mechanism of composite pavement coupled tire models, developing modelling methods and technologies.
  • Research on the parametric modelling of the tire model and conduct model high/medium/low attachment road test data verification under the same set of model parameters.
  • Research on the mechanism of the influence of road adhesion coefficient on tire lateral force, longitudinal force and aligning moment.
  • Participating in project meetings, presenting research findings, and contributing to project reports and publications

We offer a generous annual leave package plus discretionary University closure days, excellent training and development opportunities as well as a great occupational pension scheme and a range of health-related support. The University is committed to a hybrid working approach.

About you

You will have a strong background in experimental testing, programming (MATLAB/SIMULINK) and experience in tire modelling, and should have a PhD in a relevant discipline such as mechanical, automotive, or electrical/electronic engineering. Also, experience in the automotive company would be preferred.
