About us

The International School for Government (ISfG) is designed to equip policymakers and civil servants from across the globe to meet the challenges of the future, creating leaders capable of delivering the services that citizens expect today. Through education, research and public engagement, the School focuses on the most pressing policy problems, ensuring that policy professionals are prepared with both the hard and soft skills necessary to understand how power, influence and change move through political and policy cycles. 

Since 2023, the ISfG is a part of the Policy Institute at King’s which works to solve society’s challenges with evidence and expertise and is part of the faculty of Social Sciences and Public Policy (SSPP).

The ISfG is beginning an exciting new stage in its journey, offering degree programmes for the first time, including a new programme delivered for the Department for Health and Social Care, as well as expanding its provision to UK and overseas civil services. We see significant opportunities to expand, building on the unique assets in King’s, SSPP and the Policy Institute, and are looking for an exceptional individual who can support us delivering an ambitious vision.  

About the role

To support the ISFG’s Director and team, as well as the Director of the Policy Institute, we are seeking to appoint a chair of a new advisory board. The chair will provide advice and active support for the ISfG leadership and team, and offering critical challenge and ideas focused on ensuring the school’s success.

The appointee will chair regular meetings of the school’s advisory board, which will be appointed with the Director of ISfG and Director of the Policy Institute. This new board will act as ambassadors for the school with senior stakeholders external to King’s, including supporting with business development and partnership formation.

They will also advise on the work of the ISFG, supporting the Policy Institute’s strategy to build a world leading school of government the heart of London. On occasion, the chair will be asked to give lectures; moderate panels; support on proposals for new programmes and clients; and otherwise contribute to the intellectual and educational life of the school, faculty and King’s.

This is a part time post (1 day/7 Hours per week), and you will be offered an 3 year contract.

About you

To be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills and experience:

Essential criteria

  • Experience at a senior level in public policy or public administration, either as a senior civil/public servant, or as an elected politician
  • An excellent reputation in policy or politics, both nationally & internationally
  • The ability to open doors at the highest levels of government in the UK and overseas, to support the delivery of existing programmes and develop new programmes
  • An ability to work with organisations across the globe and to reach across political divides.
  • An understanding of the UK higher education context
  • Experience in developing & executing strategies, including developing new business streams
  • Excellent oral & written communication skills
  • Ability to understand, and interest in, the needs of working professionals in governments

Desirable criteria

  • Experience of working within higher education
  • Experience with educating students from diverse cultural backgrounds
