Measuring drug use is notoriously challenging due to its complexity and the stigma associated with it. Traditional survey methods often suffer from biases, as participants may not fully disclose their drug use. Wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) presents an alternative approach to providing objective, real-time data on drug consumption trends, greatly aiding public health decision-making and policy development. This research project aims to investigate the effectiveness of WBE in monitoring drug use among university students while also assessing their public health knowledge and trends related to drug use.

This studentship is funded by a bursary from Middlesex University of £19,237 (fee-level waiver for UK students). It offers a unique opportunity for a student passionate about public health, drug policy and innovative research methods. By participating in this project, you will engage in cutting-edge research utilizing wastewater-based epidemiology, an emerging and impactful field that provides real-time, objective data on drug use trends. You will gain hands-on experience in both quantitative and qualitative research methods, enhancing your analytical skills and understanding of public health dynamics. Furthermore, you will contribute to a project that has the potential to shape future public health policies and educational programs, making a tangible difference in addressing drug misuse among university students. This is not just a chance to advance your academic career, but also to be at the forefront of public health research, influencing positive change within the community.
