We have an opportunity to recruit a Data Scientist to join the Infectious Diseases Data Observatory (IDDO), based at the Centre for Tropical Medicine and Global Health, Nuffield Department of Medicine.

IDDO’s vision is effective treatment and control of infectious diseases affecting the most vulnerable populations. Our mission is to reduce the impact of neglected and emerging infections by improving the evidence for their effective management through wide-scale collaboration and data reuse within the global infectious disease community.

You will take the lead in data analysis, methods development, and statistical modelling for a variety of projects relating to treatment optimization in infectious disease and global health, with a focus on improving the diagnosis and triage of patients with suspected severe malaria.

You will be responsible for advising and collaborating with PhD students and other staff at IDDO in the Science Team on a day-to-day basis. You will be tasked with developing novel methodologies for analysis and data collection in collaboration with members of the research team. You will be reporting research results to international collaborators and funding bodies; as well as at national and international research conferences. You will also be responsible for contributing to the production of scientific reports and publications for high-profile journals, including taking leadership in more specialized publications on statistical modelling or machine learning.

To be successful in this role, it is essential you hold a PhD/DPhil (or close to completion) in Statistics, Machine Learning, Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science, or another quantitative field along with demonstrable experience, ability, and practical success in solving quantitative problems. You will have proficiency in at least one programming language and an interest in collaborating with clinical and laboratory scientists. You will also have excellent and effective communication skills, both oral and written, for presenting research results clearly, to a broad audience.
