Salary: £41,732 per annum inclusive of London Allowance, SGUL 6
Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Fixed-Term/Contract
Placed On: 19th August 2024

Job Ref: 433-24-R

We are seeking to appoint a Research Fellow for 36 months to join our vibrant and growing multidisciplinary team researching the effects of noise pollution on health and wellbeing.

Children who go to noisy schools near airports have poorer health and reading skills than children who go to quieter schools. This has led to a focus on how such effects can be managed. We are conducting a study in West London primary schools near Heathrow airport, examining whether the noise insulation of classrooms and school buildings mean that children are no longer experiencing poorer health and have better reading skills.

The postholder will work on a study evaluating the impact of school-based interventions for aircraft noise on children’s health and learning around London Heathrow airport. The project comprises three studies:

  • a quantitative before and after study assessing the interventions using key stage educational data reported by schools;
  • a qualitative study exploring users experiences of the intervention; and
  • a feasibility study developing the methodology for a quantitative before and after study in primary schools collecting data on children’s cognition and health and collecting environmental data on noise and internal/external air quality in the school.

The postholder will primarily undertake activities related to the quantitative studies.

Key attributes of the successful applicant include:

  • Masters-level Degree in Psychology, Sociology, or a similar social science or public health related discipline;
  • Experience of primary quantitative data collection (e.g., using surveys, questionnaires, or similar methods);
  • Experience of undertaking statistical analysis;
  • Excellent organisation, prioritisation, and time management skills;
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; and
  • Experience of actively participating in a Team.

Funding is available for full-time equivalent posts, but this may be configured as a combination of part-time appointments.
