The Marine Research Group at QUB has been at the forefront of wave energy development over the past 50 years and is now leading a HORIZON EUROPE funded project to build a full scale wave energy converter array. This Research Fellow post will focus on experimental tank testing to address all relevant research questions, like PTO control, array interaction and installation/towing procedures.

The group operates two tank test facilities with state of the art equipment like motion tracking and force controlled wavemakers.

About the person:

We are looking for a motivated researcher with a hands on attitude to design, build and test a fully instrumented WEC (Wave Energy Converter) array with the aim of optimising the array layout and control systems. Furthermore, we want to investigate experimentally the seakeeping of the WEC prototype during transport, wet storage and installation procedures.

Training and support will be provided, but candidates are expected to take ownership of their part of the project and produce high quality research outputs consistent with project aims and commensurate with career stage. This will include collaborating and co-authoring with the PI and wider project team, day to day lab management, planning and outreach. If desired by the candidate, opportunity will be provided to co-supervise PhD students and support teaching activities.

Candidates are required to:

  • Have or be about to obtain a *relevant in marine or coastal engineering or related fields.
  • Demonstrate specific, relevant research experience to include:
    • Undertaking research in the area of experimental testing of wave energy converters (or similar offshore structures)
    • A proven track record of using model scale tank testing to carry out analyses, critical evaluations, and interpretations of WEC designs (or similar offshore structures)
    • Working effectively as part of a research team in the development and promotion of the research theme.

Fixed term contract posts are available for the stated period in the first instance but in particular circumstances may be renewed or made permanent subject to availability of funding.
