About us

We are one of the world’s leading research centres for the study of prions and their wider relevance to neurodegenerative disease with a growing research activity in Alzheimer’s disease (www.prion.ucl.ac.uk).

The Institute is highly multidisciplinary with close integration of structural and molecular biology, genetics, cellular and animal models, small molecule and immuno-therapeutics and clinical research.

About the role

The main purpose of the post is to support the clinical and research activities of the National Prion Clinic and the relevant MRC Prion Unit at UCL Programme. In particular, this might include the assessment of complex patients suspected to have prion disease, clinical supervision of clinical research fellows, and liaison with consultant colleagues around the country and at the National CJD Research and Surveillance Unit. The postholder will be expected to lead on specific projects in discussion with Professors Collinge and Mead, and Dr Mok. The post-holder will be part of the National Prion Clinic (NPC) team.

The post is for 12 months in the first instance. In the event that further funding is secured to continue the research studies, it is envisaged that the post may be extended.

About you

You will be a consultant neurologist, or in a training post and expected to achieve CCT within 12 months.

You will have a specialist interest in clinical and research aspects of cognitive and/or palliative neurology, or a specialist interest in prion diseases.

This role will involve travel around the country to see selected and often particularly complex cases, and supervision of Clinical Research Fellows who will typically see more routine cases suspected to have prion diseases.

You will be seen as a senior member of staff at the National Prion Clinic and Institute of Prion Diseases with a leadership role, and contribute to management activities. In addition you will be expected to contribute to research studies and develop areas of research of your own, setting research questions, designing projects, raising funds, managing project conduct and reporting conclusions to our peers and stakeholders.

You will need to play a role in strengthening our partnerships with patient organisations, colleagues at NCJDRSU, the relevant medical, scientific, and local community in Fitzrovia, and the media.
