Lecturer/Senior Lecturer/Reader Position in Statistics & Data Analytics (Research & Teaching Track)

University of Glasgow - College of Science & Engineering - School of Mathematics & Statistics

This post is full time (35 hours per week) and is offered on an open-ended basis.

The School of Mathematics & Statistics is looking for enthusiastic candidates to join the rapidly and substantially growing Statistics & Data Analytics group. The School and the Statistics & Data Analytics group foster a collegiate and supportive environment, encouraging collaborative research within and across disciplines www.gla.ac.uk/schools/mathematicsstatistics. In REF2021, the School was ranked 1st in Scotland and 5th in the UK and for Mathematical Sciences by the Times Higher Education GPA.

This position is a result of strategic investment into our AI3 initiative of Analytics and Inference Innovation for Impact to further enhance leadership, staff interests and expertise within the group, for more information see gla.ai. This initiative combines our existing success across research and teaching innovation into a centre of excellence in the areas of statistics, data analytics and applied data science. The Statistics group at Glasgow has expanded significantly in recent years, and has a wide range of research and teaching expertise- from fundamental research at the interface of statistical methodology and data science over areas including applied probability, Bayesian modelling and inference, computational statistics, emulation and uncertainty quantification, extreme value modelling, functional data analysis, machine learning and spatio-temporal modelling- to driving interdisciplinary impact in applications ranging across biostatistics, epidemiology, and health, environmental and ecological sciences, genetics, biology and *omics, imaging and image processing, linguistics, social and urban studies, and forensic sciences.

Applications are welcome in any areas of statistical methodology, data analytics and data science that complement or enhance the existing strengths within the School. We offer an inclusive environment that particularly encourages applications from those within under-represented groups in our discipline, and from those with interests at the interface of computational statistics and data science. We are seeking applicants who lead related research within the School and contribute to our very successful and expanding online distance learning and on-campus MSc programmes in Statistics & Data Analytics.

The following positions, which are equivalent to US tenure track Assistant Professor (Grade 7/8) and Associate Professor (Grade 9) are available:

Lecturer/Senior Lecturer/Reader in Statistics and Data Analytics

  • The School are looking to make multiple appointments
  • Available on the Research & Teaching track
  • Attractive start-up packages are available

Research has shown that women and members of other underrepresented groups are reluctant to apply for a position if they do not meet all the advertised criteria. We encourage potential candidates to still consider applying and to contact Professor Janine Illian janine.illian@glasgow.ac.uk, Head of Statistics, or Professor Nigel Mottram nigel.mottram@glasgow.ac.uk, Head of School, for an informal discussion.

We are also holding an informal webinar on Thursday August 29th at 2:00 pm (GMT+1) to give interested candidates an opportunity to learn about the School and the Statistics group as well as about the posts; and to provide an opportunity to ask relevant questions anonymously. Please register for this event here. Please note that the deadline for registration is Wednesday 28th August at 10am (GMT+1). If you are unable to attend the webinar, please note that a recording will be available from 2nd September, which can be accessed here.

We expect interviews to take place in the week commencing 21st October 2024. All interviews and presentations will very likely take place in person.
