The Role and the Department   

The Advanced Technician works within the Teaching Laboratories to support and facilitate undergraduate teaching and provide a first-class laboratory learning experience for our students.

The post holder is responsible for assisting with the daily operations required to fulfil a broad range of technical requirements associated with the Undergraduate Chemistry Teaching section. Whilst the role is focused within an Undergraduate Chemistry Teaching Laboratory, the post holder may be required to provide technical support across the Level 1, Synthetic or Physical Chemistry Laboratory. Main duties include the timely provision of course requirements, solutions and reagents and maintenance of complex scientific laboratory equipment and instrumentation.

Essential Criteria

Qualifications/Experience

  • Five GCSE’s at least Grade C or level four (or equivalent) including English Language and Mathematics
  • Post-16 qualification in a Chemistry related discipline or equivalent experience.
  • Experience of working in a team.
  • Ability to provide advice and guidance to a range of customers and colleagues.
  • Experience of teaching/research project working within an educational, commercial, or industrial environment.
  • Experience of monitoring own activities and others to ensure health and safety regulations are adhered to.
  • Experience of managing time to meet deadlines

Skills/Abilities/Knowledge

  • Excellent spoken and written communication skills.
  • Strong digital competence across a range of digital devices and apps including Microsoft 365 applications.
  • Industry or professional knowledge/recognition relevant to the role supported by relevant courses or certification.
  • Committed to continuing professional development.

Desirable Criteria

  • Ability to solve problems yourself and as part of a team and plan appropriate solutions.
  • Ability to participate in networks to share and discuss good practice and exchange information.
  • Relevant knowledge, expertise and skills needed to create, build and construct resources, tools and equipment to meet teaching and research outputs.
