The University of York’s Wolfson Atmospheric Chemistry Laboratories (WACL) are recruiting a Research Associate to carry out policy informed research evaluating UK air pollution through analysis of extensive UK monitoring data and additional government data sources. The post holder will also engage in knowledge brokering and support knowledge exchange activities providing opportunities for government officials to access and engage with academic evidence and expertise. This research, funded by the government Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, is an exciting opportunity to work at the science-policy interface in partnership with leading academics and decision makers.

WACL is the largest dedicated atmospheric chemistry facility in the UK, home to more than 70 researchers. WACL supports an exceptional research environment, providing access to state-of-the-art facilities and a wide range of interdisciplinary expertise. Role

We are looking for a candidate with excellent data analysis skills, experienced in communicating complex science effectively, and has the flexibility to respond positively and creatively to the evolving needs of policy makers. The candidate must have an interest in enabling science to have impact outside of academia.

Skills, Experience & Qualification needed

  • A PhD or equivalent in atmospheric, emissions or related environmental science.
  • Knowledge of air pollution science and relevant data analysis techniques with experience of using data analysis to provide novel insights.
  • Highly developed communication skills to enable interaction with academic and policy audiences both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to and experience of developing research objectives and proposals and conducting individual and collaborative projects to deliver results.
  • Experience of effective data management and manipulation using appropriate programming languages and/or software.
  • Interest in and enthusiasm for air pollution science and policy
  • A collaborative ethos, positive attitude and willingness to work proactively with partners, colleagues and stakeholders in WACL, NCAS and other work areas/institutions
  • Attention to detail and commitment to high quality, with the ability to plan and prioritise own work in order to meet deadlines
  • Commitment to personal development and updating of knowledge and skills
