The Royal Society is the independent scientific academy of the UK dedicated to promoting excellence in science. Our Senior Fellowships team manage a range of prestigious awards which provide support for high calibre mid-career and senior scientists. We are looking for a highly motivated, experienced candidate with excellent organisational, people and stakeholder management skills, to lead as a Senior Manager on the development and delivery of a portfolio of high-profile schemes. 

Proven experience working in a research management or grant funding environment is essential. You will be responsible for leading the delivery of the Royal Society’s Senior Fellowship programmes, including the new Faraday Discovery Fellowships, which represent a significant investment by the Society. You will lead a team of four, be expected to develop and maintain strong working relationships with external partners and to represent the Society at external events and forums. You will have proven ability to facilitate meetings and discussions, manage sizable budgets, balance staff resource, analyse complex data, engage with award holders, and implement robust decision-making and monitoring & evaluation processes. You will be capable of using your initiative to the full, working with people from diverse cultures and taking on wide-ranging responsibilities. 

This is an exciting opportunity to join the team at the start of a new Grants Strategy. The successful candidate will work closely with the Head of Senior Fellowships and other senior colleagues helping to fulfil our strategic objectives and ensure maximum impact and effectiveness of the Society’s programmes. 

The main purpose of the role is: 

  • To work with Heads and Director to develop, shape and implement the Royal Society's grants activity in a defined area in accordance with the Society's and Grants' strategic objectives and the needs of the research and innovation community.
  • To provide portfolio oversight, leading a team, and working collaboratively across teams to ensure integrated and effective ways of working.
  • To act as a key interface with the external research community and with partners, building and maintaining effective relationships and insights

Line manages: Grants Managers/Officers

Location: Carlton House Terrace, London, SW1Y 5AG plus hybrid remote working

Contract: Permanent 

Hours: 35 hours per week, full time

Pay Band: E  

Salary: £54, 550
