Research IT Developer

This new full–time post is available on a fixed-term basis from 01/09/2024 – 31/08/2025, with the possibility of extension if further funding is secured.

The Digital Humanities (DH) Lab in conjunction with Research IT at the University of Exeter seek to appoint a Research IT Developer to work on several exciting Humanities projects. Working with specific academic teams and based within the DH Lab, the post holder will work on projects from a variety of subject areas, including social justice, classics, history, and film.

The main projects that the postholder will work on are expected to be the following:

• Connecting Late Antiquities (AHRC-funded): creating a digital resource that connects Late Antique person and place data drawn from multiple sources, by extending an existing XML database framework (eXist-db, TEI/XML).
• Learning Anglo-French: French Language-Learning Manuscripts in Britain, c.1200-1500 (ERC-funded): creating a public repository of metadata and select transcriptions concerning French language learning in medieval Britain, by extending an existing XML database framework (eXist-db, TEI/XML).
• Children at War (AHRC-funded): supporting the creation of an oral history archive on the experiences of child soldiers across Africa, using existing collections management software (Omeka S).
• Women’s Screen Work in Archive (AHRC-funded): designing database structures in existing collections management software (Omeka S), in order to help create a resource that foregrounds women’s contributions to film.

While not requiring subject or language knowledge themselves, the postholder will work with the various academic teams to understand their data needs and create sustainable digital outputs. These will be required to fit into and extend existing database frameworks already in use in the DH Lab, following in-house agile practices. Throughout this work the successful applicant will have the full collaboration of the project teams and the Exeter DH Lab staff. Training in specific software/technologies will be provided as needed.

About You
The ideal candidate will have strong web development skills and a willingness to learn about the platforms and software used in the DH Lab. They will be aware of current methods in the field with a view to bringing them to the team for incorporation into the DH Lab’s portfolio of projects. The successful candidate will possess an enthusiasm for working closely with diverse research teams to develop new and innovative approaches for conveying research results and exciting visualisations within a sustainable framework for the long-term survival of resources.
