Senior Research Associate in Epidemiology and Medical Statistics

University of Bristol - Bristol Medical School

Location: Bristol
Salary: £41,732 to £46,974
Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Permanent
Placed On: 8th August 2024
Closes: 5th September 2024
Job Ref: VAC1012664

The role

We are seeking a talented and enthusiastic postdoctoral researcher, with experience in medical statistics applied to epidemiology and public health research, to join our Cancer Research UK funded research team analysing data from a long-term randomised controlled trial to answer key questions needed to inform national and international prostate cancer screening policy.

This post is an excellent opportunity for postdoctoral researcher to develop their career through secondary analysis of an ongoing research trial.  The post is funded by a CRUK grant that aims to update outstanding policy questions using the combined CAP (cluster randomsied trial of PSA testing for prostate cancer) and ProtecT (Prostate testing for cancer and treatment) trials with up to 18 years of follow-up. CAP and ProtecT hold the world’s largest prospective dataset of metastatic and fatal prostate cancer following randomisation to screening, and have shaped national and international screening and treatment policies.

The successful candidate will join our collaborative multi-disciplinary team of cancer research scientists and PhD students in Bristol and beyond in a lively and engaging research environment.

What will you be doing?

The successful candidate will be responsible for the development and implementation of statistical analysis plans (SAPs) under the supervision of the senior statistician and in collaboration with the multi-disciplinary cancer research team comprised of both clinical and non-clinical researchers.

The aims are to:

  1. Investigate the individual and joint performance of already collected epidemiological (e.g. insulin-like growth factors), clinical (e.g. body mass index; urinary symptoms) and polygenic risk data (plus age, PSA, stage and Gleason) to predict 15-year prostate cancer metastases and mortality (ProtecT follow-up).
  2.    Evaluate current post-diagnostic risk-stratification tools (e.g. CPG, AUA-I, CAPRA, Predict Prostate) for predicting 15-year prostate cancer metastases and mortality in screen-detected prostate cancer, and determine if performance improves with genetic, epidemiological, and clinical data, based on ProtecT follow-up.

The results will enhance the evidence on the pre- and post-diagnostic identification of men most likely to benefit from early detection.

You should apply if

We are seeking a talented and enthusiastic postdoctoral researcher, with experience in medical statistics applied to epidemiology and public health research.  PhD in epidemiology, medical statistics, data science or a related quantitative discipline.
