The Slade School of Fine Art is an art school where staff and students approach contemporary art practice, and the history and theories that inform it through experimentation, imagination and research-oriented practice. The Slade is a department of University College London (UCL) with a lively and dynamic practice led research culture.

About the role

We are seeking to recruit a Sculpture and 3D Technician to provide professional technical expertise, guidance, advice, support, and administration as part of the day-to-day operation of the Slade workshop. The postholder will have skills in metal working processes and general workshop abilities covering a variety of skillsets such as wood, mould making, casting, plastics, ceramics and digital fabrication.

The postholder will contribute to the delivery of a high quality, effective and efficient service within the Workshop Team, ensuring compliance with relevant legislation, health and safety policies, and University regulations.

The postholder will also support student learning by providing informal and formal training and instruction, helping students develop proficiency with relevant platforms, tools, and methods. They will work closely with the Workshop Team and collaborate with the wider team of technicians to support other technical areas as needed, ensuring a cohesive and efficient working environment.

About you

The successful will have a degree qualification or equivalent, preferably with an art & design or fabrication specialism and experience of working in a busy technical workshop, planning and delivering workshop, while supervising students of all levels individually and in groups. The candidate will have good general workshop skills in various areas such as wood, metal, plastic, casting, mould making, ceramics and digital fabrication and specialist skills in metal working processes, ideally including welding, foundry and forge work. Comprehensive knowledge of Workshop Health, Safety and COSHH procedures and regulations are essential.

The candidate will demonstrate a flexible approach and enthusiasm for working with students in hands-on, experimental environments and the ability to communicate with students and staff at all levels. The candidate should have a willingness to learn new skills, as required, to develop their experience and expertise.

Interviews are expected to take place in-person on 10 September 2024 at the Slade on the Bloomsbury Campus. We will also be arranging tours of the workshops for all shortlisted candidates prior to the interviews and these are expected to be conducted between 4 and 6 September.
