The Manchester School of Architecture is ranked 5th in the prestigious QS world university rankings and enjoys the unique context of being a collaboration between Manchester Metropolitan University and the University of Manchester. It is one of the largest Schools of Architecture in the country with over 1250 students and over 150 staff from diverse backgrounds and is proud to retain both its quality and sense of community despite its size.

The specific role is as a Lecturer in the [CPU]ai Atelier which is at the forefront of research-led architectural design, with all teaching at the MArch level intricately connected to groundbreaking research conducted in our [CPU]lab. The Atelier delves into alternative design processes by developing and applying bespoke computational tools, techniques, and AI processes. By coding our own tools, including (e.g. bespoke graph networks, simulations, models or custom Grasshopper plugins), the Atelier engages with the city through complexity approaches such as systems theories, self-organization, emergence, intelligence, and adaptation. Our goal is to develop innovative design approaches for smart and sustainable future cities. Explore examples of our students' innovative work at https://www.msa.ac.uk/study/ateliers/cpu/ and @complexurbanism.

As a Lecturer, you will play a crucial role in our team, contributing significantly to both research and teaching, including the leadership of one of the M.Arch cohorts in the Atelier, as well contributing to its future direction with other [CPU]lab members. Situated in the [CPU]lab, you will have a key role in advancing our research agenda and evolution to an international centre of research excellence. The lab, recognized as a special status research group within the faculty, will support your research development through structured mentorship, collaborative research opportunities, outputs, and inclusion in funded projects. See www.complexurbanism and https://www.msa.ac.uk/research/cpulab-smart-and-sustainable-future-cities/ .

Working within a dynamic team supported by a well-established lab, you will be part of a studio that integrates novel research with teaching, exploring the latest advancements in computational design, and engaging in collaborative research projects that have a real-world impact. You will inspire and mentor the next generation of architects, guiding them to future practice through development of cutting-edge design tools and processes.

Alongside your teaching in the Atelier you be required to teach design studio in the BA Architecture programme (or elsewhere in the School) for one day per week. Depending on workload, you may be required to contribute to other areas of the curriculum depending on your expertise, such as Humanities, Technologies, Digital Design, and Professional Studies.

Some previous teaching experience is essential to meet the expectations of a Lecturer position and to qualify for the Research pathway (typically 20% of time for an Early Career Researcher) you should have a PhD (or imminent completion) along with a clear direction for your future research plans and income generation in digital design, urban modelling, simulation, and/or urban analytics. You will need full stack coding abilities, Python, familiarity with computer science, AI (ML, ABM, and/or intelligent agents), and/or graph/network creation and modelling.

Informal and preliminary discussions are highly encouraged and can be held with Atelier leader Ulysses Sengupta via u.sengupta@mmu.ac.uk.
