The Manchester School of Architecture is ranked 5th in the prestigious QS world university rankings and enjoys the unique context of being a collaboration between Manchester Metropolitan University and the University of Manchester. It is one of the largest Schools of Architecture in the country with over 1250 students (typically representing some 85 countries) and over 150 staff from diverse backgrounds and is proud to retain both its quality and sense of community despite its size.

The School is characterised by excellence, ambition, boldness, inquisitiveness, innovation, and social justice and responsibility. These facets generate a unique blend and balance between research led teaching, impressive and relevant research outputs (84% of research activity is world leading or internationally excellent), and extensive professional industry links, all of which encourage our students to cultivate their own unique approach to architecture and their careers thereafter.

The specific role is as a Lecturer in the Continuity Atelier which was established in 1993 as Continuity in Architecture, a studio for research informed teaching, that specialises in the sustainable adaptation of buildings, landscape and urban space within historic contexts.

The Atelier believes that an elemental approach to studying architectural and landscape technology within historic settings has never been more pressing. Inspired by our forebears' systematic analysis of contextual resource - their application of ready means and traditional craft techniques originating from vibrant environments, we strive to rediscover sustainable, layered, nuanced, contextual and environmentally appropriate solutions for our time.  Continuity is interested in the distinct relationships buildings and landscapes have with climate and place and how they can express the nature of a region and represent a particular culture or situation. It is interested in the articulation of space; how interiors and the exteriors interrelate, whether explicit or not, and how spaces can be grouped or connected to form complex environments. It is also interested in  why buildings and landscapes are designed and their morphology, along with detail - how intimate details and the expression of connections reinforce and characterise the whole.

Within the Atelier you will be responsible for the teaching and leadership of the first year cohort of the M.Arch, which requires a strong understanding the design process, a holistic approach to architectural design and construction, and the profession of architecture.

Alongside your teaching in the Continuity Atelier you be required to teach design studio in the BA Architecture programme (or elsewhere in the School) for one day per week. Depending on workload, you may be required to contribute to other areas of the curriculum depending on your expertise, such as Humanities, Technologies, and Professional Studies.

Some previous teaching experience is essential to meet the expectations of a Lecturer position and to qualify for the Research pathway (typically 20% of time for an Early Career Researcher) you should have a PhD (or imminent completion) along with a clear direction for your future research plans and income generation, all of which should clearly inform your teaching and pedagogic approach, with relevance to the agenda of the Atelier.

You will also have exceptional inter-personal and communication qualities, excellent organisational and administrative skills, and a collaborative approach to working. We will also look to you to ensure an excellent student experience through the use of relevant and inspiring learning and teaching.

Informal discussions can be held with Atelier Leader John Lee via john.lee@mmu.ac.uk
