Hours: Part Time

The Manchester School of Architecture is ranked 5th in the prestigious QS world university rankings and enjoys the unique context of being a collaboration between Manchester Metropolitan University and the University of Manchester. It is one of the largest Schools of Architecture in the country with over 1250 students (typically representing some 85 countries) and over 150 staff from diverse backgrounds and is proud to retain both its quality and sense of community despite its size.

The school is characterised by excellence, ambition, boldness, inquisitiveness, innovation, and social justice and responsibility. These facets generate a unique blend and balance between research-led teaching, impressive and relevant research outputs (84% of research activity is world leading or internationally excellent), and extensive professional industry links, all of which encourage our students to cultivate their own unique approach to architecture and their careers thereafter.

This specific tutor role is to work within the Foundation Year of the BA(Hons) Architecture. The Foundation's teaching ethos is centred around identifying and meeting individual learning needs and acknowledging the range and variety of students' existing knowledges of space and the built environment.

The Foundation Year targets prospective students from groups that are currently underrepresented in the Architecture profession and aims to address broader inequalities stemming from access to education. The course will provide students with an ideal transition between School and University, or as part of a career change. Whilst helping students to develop design portfolios and provide insight into architecture as a career path, it will also focus on fundamental skills required to study architecture at an undergraduate level.

The Foundation course is fundamentally about the widening participation agenda for our department and aims to open up architecture to a broader audience and expand the diversity of undergraduate students entering the school. For more about the entry criteria, please see the details on our website: https://www.msa.ac.uk/study/foundation/.

We are seeking a tutor with an understanding and passion for teaching the fundamentals of architecture. The successful candidate will be a qualified architect, interior designer or work in a similar field and will be able to evidence sound knowledge and experience in the design and delivery of architectural projects from conception to completion. Previous teaching experience is essential.

We are looking for tutors who will display empathy and patience towards students and can contribute towards learning, teaching and assessing through the following principles: learning by doing; testing through drawing and making; flexibility and ability to adapt to individual student needs; creative and critical pedagogy which supports and challenges students.

The post holder must be able to:

  • Demonstrate professional practice experience in architecture.
  • Bring creativity and an openness to engage with unconventional methods of architectural education.
  • Evidence up-to-date technical knowledge in architectural practice.
  • Communicate knowledge and interest in architectural teaching and learning (pedagogy).
  • Experience of working with young people from a variety of backgrounds.

This role is only for one day a week so will not support a working visa application.

Informal discussions can be held with the Foundation Year Lead via e.crompton@mmu.ac.uk.
