The Manchester School of Architecture is ranked 5th in the prestigious QS world university rankings and enjoys the unique context of being a collaboration between Manchester Metropolitan University and the University of Manchester. It is one of the largest Schools of Architecture in the country with over 1250 students (typically representing some 85 countries) and over 150 staff from diverse backgrounds and is proud to retain both its quality and sense of community despite its size.

The School is characterised by excellence, ambition, boldness, inquisitiveness, innovation, and social justice and responsibility. These facets generate a unique blend and balance between research led teaching, and extensive professional industry links, all of which encourage our students to cultivate their own unique approach to architecture and their careers thereafter.

Joining the Manchester School of Architecture as a Lecturer in Architectural Digital Design (ADD), under the leadership of the School's Digital Design Lead, you will be responsible for contributing to the digital teaching across the School to complement our approach to thinking, designing, making, and communicating. You will embrace the range of disciplines across the School which include Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Urbanism, and Adaptive Reuse, from Foundation students to Postgraduate level, as well as supporting our ambitious plans for future programmes.

We are looking for an Architectural digital generalist to join our talented ADD team to facilitate and enhance our multi-faceted architectural digital design offering:

  • Core digital literacy: Develop and deliver core digital skills across the Foundation, BA Architecture and MA Landscape Architecture programmes.
  • Specialist digital literacy: Develop and deliver specialist skills based on the needs of our unique ateliers and postgraduate programmes.
  • Enhanced Digital literacy: Develop and deliver open weekly workshops to students at all levels across the school from basic to bleeding edge emerging digital skills.
  • Student Support: We offer bookable one-to-one tutorials throughout the week to assist students in their digital skills development and design resolution.
  • Virtual Learning Environment (VLE): We utilise Moodle to provide access to software, hardware, learning resources and makerspaces.

The role will also include supporting the Digital Design Lead in liaising with the University's IT department, working closely with our workshop staff at both Manchester Metropolitan University and the University of Manchester, as well as supporting our on-line delivery and remote working strategies.

The ability to already use and teach a number of core packages such as the Adobe suite, AutoCAD, Revit, Rhino and various rendering engines will be essential as will the willingness to learn new software, maintain currency, and share knowledge with academic and technical colleagues. Experience of helping students customise tools and software, and emerging AI technologies will be an advantage.

You will have exceptional digital skills and experience with digital media techniques to facilitate the development of the design processes of our students, as we will look to you to ensure an excellent student experience through the use of relevant and inspiring learning, teaching, and assessment methods. Therefore, it will be important to understand design processes as well as the relationship between analogue and digital techniques.

Please note that as this role is part-time it will not support a UK working visa application.

Informal and confidential discussions can be held with Digital Design Lead Jason Taylor via Jason.Taylor@mmu.ac.uk.
