Clinical Research Fellow in Cerebrovascular Disease

Imperial College London - Hammersmith Hospital / Charing Cross Hospital

Location: London, Hybrid
Salary: £55,329 per annum
Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Fixed-Term/Contract
Placed On: 7th August 2024
Closes: 2nd September 2024
Job Ref: MED0484

About the role:

This is an exciting opportunity to join our new research programme to establish the causes of cerebral small vessel disease. One of the commonest causes of stroke and dementia, our understanding of the disease is limited and therefore we have no treatments. Our group combines studies in Big Data analysis, MRI imaging, clinical and physiological cohorts and clinical trials to understand why the disease is so variable, what the underlying pathways are, therefore, how to treat it.

The post is ideal for doctors with a clinical interest and experience in neurology, stroke or geratology who have completed Foundation and core training and are either in a training post (ST3-5) or ready for one. Research experience in this field is desirable but not essential.

What you would be doing:

This key role will lead recruitment and assessment of patients in our clinical cohort and future clinical trials, including clinical, cognitive and functional assessment. You will learn and perform physiological assessments including transcranial Doppler and cardiovascular physiology, as well as MRI imaging studies including respiratory gas challenges. In addition to supporting the core patient-facing work of the programme, you will be expected to develop your own research project within the programme with opportunities either to focus on analysis of MRI imaging to define patterns of small vessel disease, or to define the cardiovascular physiological basis of small vessel disease and how this relates to clinical and imaging markers of the disease, depending on prior skills and aptitude.

What we are looking for someone:

  • Medically qualified (MBBS or equivalent) with GMC registration and a licence to practice.
  • Completed Foundation Training, ideally with clinical experience consistent with specialty training in neurology, stroke or geratology (ST3-5).
  • To lead recruitment, assessment and follow-up of patients as part of prospective cohort studies and randomised controlled trials.
  • Able to train to perform physiological assessments such as transcranial ultrasound, and to manage and supervise research MRI scanning, including gas challenges.
  • Develop skills in analysis of physiological data, MRI imaging and statistical analysis of large datasets.
  • Manage own research and administrative activities.
  • Publish research papers in peer-reviewed journals

What we can offer you:

  • The opportunity to continue your career at a world-leading institution and be part of our mission to continue science for humanity
  • Grow in your career with tailored training programmes for academic staff including dedicated support with navigating your career and managing research as well as a transparent promotion process.
  • Sector-leading salary and remuneration package (including 39 days off a year and generous pension schemes)
  • Be part of a diverse, inclusive, and collaborative work culture with various staff networks and resources designed to support your personal and professional wellbeing.

Further Information

The post is a full time, fixed-term position for 2 years, depending on previous experience, with the potential for extension of the position.
