School of Psychology and Institute for Mental Health

Location: University of Birmingham, Edgbaston, Birmingham UK

Full time starting salary is normally in the range £93,666 to £126,281

The Institute for Mental Health and the School of Psychology wishes to appoint a clinical academic psychiatrist (CCT or equivalent in either adult psychiatry or child and adolescent psychiatry) to further strengthen our capacity in translational mental health research.

We wish to attract a psychiatrist with research expertise which aligns with one or more of our IMH research themes: suicide and self-harm; early intervention and prevention; innovation in policy, systems, and services; justice, equalities, and capabilities; mental health data science and epidemiology; multidisciplinary approaches to the neuroscience of mental health. We have significant research strength in Psychosis and Mood Disorders clinical trials, data science and experimental medicine, and further expansion in these areas would be particularly welcome. The IMH is housed in a new Wolfson Research Unit and is a key part of the Wellcome Trust-funded Midlands Mental Health and Neurosciences PhD Programme for Healthcare Professionals. The Institute has attracted further significant recent investment as part of the Oxford Health NIHR Biomedical Research Centre.

As well as these strengths within the Institute for Mental Health, we would also welcome colleagues whose research plans would connect with the Centre for Developmental Science and the Centre for Human Brain Health in the School and the Institute for Inflammation and Aging, Pharmacology, Applied Health Research and/or the Birmingham Clinical Trials Unit in the College of Medical and Dental Sciences.

The post-holder will contribute at a senior level to teaching, research, and administration. In addition, you will be expected to contribute to academic citizenship, likely to be demonstrated through generous, mutually respectful and supportive working relationships with all staff and students.

Clinical opportunities

We anticipate the clinical component of the role will ideally align with the candidate’s research interests. The post is 80% funded by the University and 20% by the NHS with one-day of clinical work with either Birmingham Women’s and Children’s NHS Foundation Trust (BWC) or Birmingham and Solihull NHS Foundation Trust (BSMHFT). Across these organisations, a variety of clinical sessions are available including community or inpatient/PICU CAMHS, eating disorders, mood disorders, neurodevelopment, early intervention in psychosis, perinatal psychiatry, liaison psychiatry, neuropsychiatry, addiction services, and general adult (inpatient or community).

Person Specification

  • A higher degree relevant to the research/teaching area (usually PhD) or equivalent qualifications.
  • GMC registration and entry on the specialist register
  • CCT or equivalent in either adult psychiatry or child and adolescent psychiatry

Informal enquires to Professor Matthew Broome  m.r.broome@bham.ac.uk and Professor Steven Marwaha s.marwaha@bham.ac.uk.
