About the role

Reporting to and working closely with Michael Grubb, Professor of Energy and Climate Change, and Simon Sharpe, Director of S-Curve Economics and Policy Associate at the UCL Institute for Innovation and Public Purpose. At ISR, working along with Research Fellows Yaroslav Melekh, and Claudia Brown, potentially with other researchers on electricity systems and markets across BSEER. Liaising with Chinese research partners on the project at several research institutions in Beijing (Tsinghua University; Energy Research Institute; Beijing Normal University; and WRI China). The successful candidate will (a) work with the overall project leads (Michael Grubb and Simon Sharpe) to help integrate the research findings from multiple streams of work on the programme, in the contest of the overall effort to conduct comprehensive Systems Mapping; and (b) conduct comparative analysis of the UK and China’s power sector reform processes, with a focus on understanding and communicating how UK experience, and options currently under consideration in the UK market reform process, could be relevant in the Chinese context. The successful candidate may also help advise and interpret work at BNU on exploratory agent-based modelling of the Chinese power sector. Finally, will also contribute to a report summarising the project’s findings, and to engagement and communication of findings within China and the UK. The post is available from 12 August 2024 and has funding for 12 months in the first instance. Further funding to support the post may be available. About you

The successful candidate should have PhD or equivalent experience in disciplines directly relevant to energy/electricity market design and operation, along with knowledge of the functioning of electricity markets including in the UK and / or China, and of policies relevant to the transition to low emission power systems including market reform in the context of the transition to clean power technologies. Familiarity with the technique of systems mapping with causal loop diagrams, and potentially knowledge of agent-based modelling, would be an advantage.
