We seek PhD students who are willing to drive advanced measurements (EIS, ICA, pulse-excitation techniques and embedded sensors) research on BESS and based on data analysis develop the next generation high fidelity BESS models that can push the limits of understanding of all battery systems. 

The Division for Power and Energy Systems of DTU Wind and Energy Systems provides cutting edge research in sustainable, reliable and cost-efficient energy systems for the benefit of society. At DTU Wind and Energy Systems you will enjoy the advantages of a creative and inspiring work environment shared with about 400 highly skilled and motivated colleagues. 

The PhD position is part of the Nordic5Tech (N5T) battery initiative at the 5 Nordic technical universities. Joining the team, you will be one in a pool of prestigious PhD students breaking new ground at the absolute forefront of BESS technology. As part of the N5T program you will spend up to 6 months external stay at KTH in Stockholm, Sweden. 

Responsibilities and qualifications

Your overall focus will be to strengthen the department’s BESS competences in the intersection between theory and the real world by using advanced condition monitoring, modeling and control.

As part of the N5T PhD program, your primary tasks will be to:

  • Pioneer research on advanced condition monitoring and analysis in active BESS’s.
  • Disseminate your work at conferences and peer reviewed journals.
  • Network with international research bodies, academic institutions, and industry.
  • Follow and complete selected courses.
  • Assist in teaching courses and co-supervise BSc and MSc. 

MSc graduates with a background in Engineering, Mathematics, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Physics, Sustainable Energy, Electro-chemistry and related disciplines including hands-on experiences are encouraged to apply.

We are looking for candidates with diverse backgrounds to join our team.

You must be a self-motivated and team-oriented person who thrives in a collaborative environment and enjoys working with complex topics.

A successful candidate would ideally fulfil more of the following points:

  • Active knowledge in Physics, Electro-chemistry, Mathematics, Computer Science or Electrical Engineering.
  • Measurements techniques and laboratory experience.
  • Skills in Physics, Electro-chemistry or Electric Equivalent Circuit Modelling.
  • Data driven statistical analysis and modelling.
  • Computational methods such as optimization, filtering algorithms, predictors, etc.
  • Software and coding skills with e.g. Python, Julia, and RTDS.
  • Excellent command of English in speech and writing.
  • Good ability to present results orally, experience with preparing scientific papers for journal publications, and demonstrated team-oriented working attitude.
