The School of Science and Engineering has an international reputation for excellent teaching and topical research, particularly in addressing global challenges in energy, the environment, health care, technology, forensic science and infrastructure.

The Leverhulme Research Centre for Forensic Science is a 10 year £10 Million project with the remit to disrupt positively the current forensic science ecosystem. As a key appointment in the £10m Leverhulme Research Centre we are recruiting for an exceptional individual to join us as a Senior Lecturer in Forensic Chemistry/Toxicology within our team.

We seek an analytical chemist with significant experience in forensic drug chemistry and/or forensic toxicology. Expertise in the chemical and toxicological analysis of Novel Psychoactive Substances (NPS) would be particularly welcome. The ideal candidate will also have strong connections and networks within the wider forensic drug and toxicology community. Having experience of working under the conditions of a Home Office controlled drug licence would be highly desirable.

The successful candidate will be expected to contribute positively to the development and delivery of continuous professional development courses and act as program lead for a distance learning MSc in drugs and toxicology, delivering up to two semesters of material in collaboration with colleagues within and outside of the University. Having experience working with chromatographic instrumentation is highly desirable.

The duties of the post also include general laboratory supervision, working with PhD students in the areas of drugs, toxicology and analytical chemistry and supporting on-going research in new psychoactive substances. They will also be expected to become involved in the public engagement activities of the Centre.

Your priorities will include:

  • Contribute to research activities with the Leverhulme Research Centre for Forensic Science.
  • Take leadership roles in projects within their areas of expertise.
  • Carry out teaching and supervision at postgraduate level, including contributing to curriculum design, enhancement of the student learning experience, and scholarship.
  • Carry out the quality and academic standards processes and administration for teaching programmes to enhance the student experience.
  • Take initiative in the review or development of academic programmes or shorter qualifications – that meet demand for skills development in their areas of expertise.

Who we’re looking for:

  • PhD in a relevant subject or equivalent level of professional practice.
  • Substantial knowledge and practical experience of analytical chemistry, forensic drug chemistry and/or forensic toxicology.
  • Demonstrated experience of excellent teaching in higher education including leadership, management and delivery of modules or programmes in drugs and/or toxicology.
  • Experience in working with chromatography (GCMS and HPLC) and spectroscopy (FTIR, IMS).
  • Experience in research and research management including supervision of research students.
