Overview
The School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences at the University of Birmingham (UK) is offering a fixed-term postdoctoral Research Fellow (RF) position up to December 2026. The RF will carry out research to improve rainfall and flood prediction for India (focusing on Bihar and Kerala), as part of a larger £3M research project on flooding and public health.
The RF role involves assessing the short-term predictability of heavy rainfall using operational weather forecasts (e.g., NCMRWF) and analyzing long-term changes in heavy rainfall (e.g., using CMIP6 and CORDEX) and flood risks in India. The RF will define heavy rainfall and flood thresholds that negatively impact healthcare provisions. Additionally, the RF will develop machine learning (ML) post-processing methods for ensemble rainfall forecasts and apply advanced ML models to enhance flood forecasting.
The researcher will work closely with Dr. Martin Widmann, Dr. Shasha Han, and Prof. Stefan Krause at the University of Birmingham, as well as with project collaborators in both the UK and India. The researcher should undertake management and administration related to the project, and be able to disseminate research findings through publications and conference presentations.
