About the role

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated and enthusiastic candidate to join the BGS Isotope Laboratories in Keyworth, Nottingham to provide technical expertise and science support as part of a larger workflow for the isotopic characterisation of rocks and other environmental materials. Your work will include:

  • Working constructively and efficiently as part of a collaborative team in a Research Council National Facility, communicating effectively to ensure the best team outcomes.
  • Training visitors and staff, with capabilities from novice to experienced.
  • Performing chemical laboratory general duties and chemical dissolution and purification of samples in the clean chemical preparation facility.
  • Loading and operating a mass spectrometer, contributing to maintenance and troubleshooting where required.
  • Helping to define and document Quality Control procedures and quantified output.
  • Adhering to and encouraging compliance with Health & Safety procedures.
  • To adhere to corporate BGS values, core expectations and basic discipline.

About you

All relevant training will be provided but previous experience in a clean chemical laboratory environment would be highly desirable.

You will gain experience in a world-class analytical geoscience laboratory, working in isotope geochemistry and geochronology as part of a small team, heavily reliant on each other to deliver objectives, working with internal and external visitors to the lab.

In addition to being a great teammate, you will be flexible, capable of working unsupervised, and be able to show initiative and take personal responsibility for your work and your Continuing Professional Development.
The specific essential and desirable skills criteria for this post will be assessed at Shortlist (S) stage, interview (I) stage, or both (S&I).

Essential

  • Degree-level (min. 2(i)) science education in an appropriate discipline, or equivalent comparable work experience (S)
  • Aptitude for repetitive tasks performed to a high level of quality (S&I)
  • Willingness to work with concentrated acids and other chemicals after appropriate training (I)
  • Be able to prioritise workloads and timeframes based on available information, multitasking to complete work in a planned, timely and efficient manner (I)
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills (S&I)
  • Demonstrable IT skills (e.g. use of Word, Excel, Access) (S)
  • Demonstrates curiosity and a drive to resolve scientific problems (S&I)
  • You will be committed to a diverse and inclusive approach to work in the geosciences (S&I)

Desirable

  • A good amount of experience in a laboratory environment, using chemicals including collection and recording of data and metadata (S)
  • Knowledge and experience of statistical analysis of data (S&I)
