MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology (LMB) is seeking to employ an Electron Microscopy (EM) Research Support Officer. The successful candidate will help to run, maintain, and develop the world-leading EM Facility at the LMB. The Facility supports around 160 active users who apply cryoEM and cryo-electron tomography (cryoET) to study important biological problems.

The Facility houses 16 electron microscopes (EMs) and associated preparation equipment, including the latest transmission EMs (TEMs), Titan-Krios G4 and Glacios with the latest direct electron detector and energy filter; and four focused ion beam scanning EMs (FIB-SEMs) including Aquilos and Arctis.

The Facility hosts and participates in research programmes developing new hardware and software for cryoEM.  Members of the Facility can also collaborate with users on research projects of mutual interest.

The post-holder will assist with the day-to-day provision of the Facility’s services including taking joint responsibility for ensuring that all equipment runs smoothly; resolving hardware and software problems; upkeep and maintenance of EM hardware and software; advising, supporting, and training users; helping with specimen preparation, data collection and image processing.

The ideal candidate will be self-motivated, have excellent interpersonal skills, be passionate about EM, and will have the desire and ability to learn new techniques and work with others.

For the Band 5 role, you will have experience working with precision scientific or technical instrumentation and hold at least a BSc or have equivalent experience.  Experience working with EM would be advantageous.

For the Band 4 role, you will have substantial experience in specimen preparation and operation of TEMs and hold a PhD or relevant experience.  Experience using cryo-FIB-SEMs would be advantageous.
