Overview

This PhD studentship will explore the potential for small particles (extracellular vesicles) released from a transplant organ to stimulate the recipient immune response against the graft. The project will utilise a number of immunological techniques to investigate this phenomenon using samples collected during clinical transplantation. This work will generate a better understanding of how the anti-transplant immune response is initiated will allow the development of more effective strategies to reduce the risk of rejection. The successful applicant will join the transplant research group at Newcastle University and be part of the Blood and Transplant Research Unit at Newcastle and Cambridge.

Eligibility criteria:

Minimum of BSc class 2.1. or equivalent in a relevant subject area.

International applications will be considered but the studentship only covers fees at the home rate.

In ‘Course choice’ tab, put ‘Postgraduate Research’ in 'Type of Study', ‘Full Time’ in ‘Mode of Study’, ‘2024’ in ‘Year of Entry’, code ‘8440F’ in ‘Course Title’, blank in ‘Research Area’. Press ‘Search’, select ‘PhD Translational and Clinical Research (FT)’, and save selection.

In the ‘Further Details’ section provide:

  • A ‘Personal Statement’ (mandatory) - upload a document or directly write into the form stating how your interests/experience relate to the project. 
  • ‘Studentship/Partnership Reference’ field: studentship code TC102 
  • When prompted for a research proposal, select ‘Write Proposal’. Type in the title of the advertised research project. A research proposal is not required.

  • English qualification if English not first language
