The role
The role of Academic Mentor includes supporting Digital and Technology Solutions (DTS) or Data Science Professional (DSP) apprenticeship students to bring together their learning and their workplace by coordinating key stakeholders from the University and the employer with the student. You will join our team of academic mentors who work with leading employers from across the sector and standardised frameworks from the apprenticeship to help students navigate the demands and opportunities of the course. These Level 7 apprenticeships aim to develop and embed a skilled Data Scientist or Data Analyst in the workforce across the country and grow data expertise in the workplace.

As Academic Mentor on a Level 7 Professional Apprenticeship programme, you will act as first point of contact for students and their line managers working in a variety of organisations across the country, providing pastoral care and mentoring. Students on the programme study primarily at distance from their places of work and attend the University for residentials lasting 3-4 days each term. Outside this intense in-person campus-based teaching, study is via e-learning and online workshops on specific study days. The academic mentor appointee is expected to be able to attend campus for these residential teaching blocks each term, though the bulk of the work outside of these days is compatible with remote online working (within the UK) at the discretion of the line manager.

A large emphasis on the programme is given to workplace activity which contributes a significant part of the credits towards the degree and the award of apprenticeship. You will act as mentor to students and employers relating to this work, addressing questions, explaining processes, monitoring progress and working with the module leads to who will provide academic guidance directly to students when required.

About you
For this post you will:

  • Possess a breadth of knowledge pertaining to Data Science or Digital tech industry and be a confident and capable mentor, comfortable and professional when in contact with students and their employers.
  • Ideally, have experience of working with a degree apprenticeship or other work-based learning programme.
