About us

The CRUK Scotland Institute is a cancer research institute, situated in Glasgow with approximately 250 researchers split across 30 research groups consisting of PIs, postdoctoral scientists, PhD students and scientific officers. It is one of Europe's leading cancer research centres, supporting cutting-edge work into the molecular mechanisms of cancer development. As well as core support from Cancer Research UK, the Institute also receives an additional third of its total income from external grants and industry collaborations. It has an excellent reputation for fundamental cancer research, including world-class metabolism studies and renowned in vivo modelling of tumour growth and metastasis. Its research ethos is about excellence, honesty, openness, accountability and integrity

Position outline

A scientific officer position is offered in the Liver Disease and Regeneration group headed by Professor Tom Bird. As a group we have developed, and now are exploiting, a suite of genetically engineered mouse models (GEMMs) of subtypes of Hepatocellular Carcinoma to explore and test the clinical utility of targeting subtype-specific pathways in this common cancer of unmet need.

The project, led by Dr Toshi Suzuki, is a collaboration with an industrial partner to test the efficacy of a novel inhibitor specifically on GEMMs which are dependent upon the pathway targeted by the compound. These data will be used to explore novel combination therapies in ongoing clinical trials in patients including the compound. The project will involve both in vitro and in vivo use of the inhibitor including considerable work with mouse models. This will also involve the use of organoid cultures and may include surgical training for orthotopic transplantation models. Analysis of samples will include immunohistochemistry, image analysis and PCR based analysis. Training is available in all relevant techniques.

The project will involve close collaboration with industry and academic partners. We are keen to recruit a technically skilled, thorough and reliable individual to this role to work as part of a team. Holding a Personal License (PIL) is highly preferable. A desire to work in translation science is essential.

To find out more about this unique opportunity to play a role in understanding how we would apply therapy to patients with cancer in this exciting field please contact:  Professor Tom Bird, t.bird@crukscotlandinstitute.ac.uk
