The University of Plymouth is seeking an enthusiastic and experienced Technician to join our team supporting the School of Biological and Marine Sciences and School of Biomedical Sciences. In this leadership role, you'll play a pivotal role in ensuring our students receive exceptional technical support, enabling them to excel in their studies and research. 

What you'll do: 

  • Lead, manage, and develop a team of technical staff within the Biological and Biomedical sciences specialism.
  • Manage the delivery of high-quality technical support with a specialism in physiology and ecotoxicology, directly impacting teaching, research, and knowledge transfer initiatives.
  • Maintain, develop, and share your specialist skills to empower staff and students.
  • Oversee the management and upkeep of all equipment within Biological and Biomedical sciences facilities.
  • Actively support practical classes, student projects, and fieldwork activities.
  • Train and supervise both staff and students, fostering a safe and productive learning environment.
  • Demonstrate and teach cutting-edge scientific techniques, keeping abreast of industry advancements.
  • Collaborate with external bodies to enhance service delivery and resource acquisition.
  • Champion health and safety within the facilities, ensuring adherence to regulations and procedures.
  • Contribute to the University's outreach activities, inspiring future generations of scientists.
  • Foster a collaborative and supportive team environment within the School and Faculty. 

Your attributes: 

  • Hold a degree in Biological or Biomedical Sciences (or equivalent qualification).
  • Possess demonstrable experience leading, managing, and supervising a team.
  • Have a proven track record of operating, calibrating, troubleshooting, and repairing scientific equipment.
  • Understand and adhere to laboratory health and safety protocols (COSHH, Risk Assessments).
  • Bring prior experience managing laboratories, encompassing both physical resources and personnel. 

A current full driving licence (manual transmission) is essential as you will be driving University of Plymouth vehicles. This role is also subject to health surveillance with our Occupational Health team.

This is a full-time, permanent position, working 37 hours a week.
