Director of the College's Economics and Finance Degree

Universidad Francisco de Vitoria – The Faculty of Law, Business and Government

1. The Faculty of Law, Business and Government

The Faculty of Law, Business and Government of the Francisco de Vitoria University (www.ufv.es) is constituted as an open ecosystem of innovation to promote the global common good through training, research and impact on society. In accordance with the Catholic identity of the Francisco de Vitoria University, and in order to contribute to its ideology and mission, the Faculty promotes people-centred education and dialogue between the social sciences (particularly between the legal, business, economic and political sciences), and between the social sciences and philosophy and theology. It uses an educational model that unites teachers and students in a dialogue that promotes the search for truth, goodness and beauty in an atmosphere of deep friendship. Thus, its pedagogical model encourages students to ask themselves, at the beginning of their university life, the big questions about the meaning of their life and the world, to learn rigorously to understand and analyse it with the tools provided by the social sciences and the humanities, and to commit themselves to the improvement of society in line with the intellectual tradition of Christian humanism.

The Faculty integrates bachelor's, master's and continuing education studies. It also has an applied research unit called the Centre for the Global Common Good and a unit dedicated to promoting the training and accompaniment of political, business and civil society leaders, called the Isabel la Católica School of Government and Leadership. It is in the process of setting up a doctoral programme that integrates the aforementioned sciences in lines of research oriented towards the practical and concrete application of the global common good.

At the undergraduate level, the Faculty has made an ambitious bid to reconfigure its curriculum in line with the defining features of liberal arts colleges, with five fundamental objectives: (1) to facilitate multidisciplinarity (dialogue between the social sciences) and transdisciplinarity (dialogue between the social sciences and the humanities); (2) to accelerate the implementation of the train-to-transform model, enhancing the pedagogical approach of awakening-discovering-deciding; (3) to increase the capacity to attract excellent students and professors from other countries; (4) to promote a culture of community work among professors and students that facilitates open-minded research; (5) to increase the impact of the UFV and the Faculty in the global sphere, for which it has signed agreements with numerous institutions in the academic, political, economic and financial spheres, and in civil society.

Although there are many variations on the concept of the liberal arts college, the vast majority of institutions that have adopted it share four essential dimensions: (1) the first stage of training is devoted to students asking the big questions about themselves and the world in which they live; (2) in a second stage, students opt for a degree (a major) and very often for a complementary training (a minor) which allows them to broaden their humanistic training; (3) Throughout their training, they are accompanied by a tutor who helps them to choose the pathways and subjects most suited to their interests and gifts; (4) Throughout their training, students do a great deal of important reading to understand the human condition and society, and work in multidisciplinary groups with active methodologies that allow them to deepen their knowledge of society in order to contribute to its continuous improvement. The Faculty has chosen to implement the college model in a particular and progressive way; in September 2023, the college was formed by five degrees of the total of 11 degrees that the Faculty has (not counting double degrees), which share a common first year, so that students can choose their major and minor at the end of the first year; in September 2024, two more degrees will join, so that the college will grow from 5 degrees to 7 degrees, and from about 260 students at the beginning to about 600 students. The College as a whole has about 3000 undergraduate students counting all courses. It is expected that in the 27/28 academic year the first students of the College will graduate from their studies.

Beyond the number of grades participating in a common first course, the College philosophy must permeate all grades in the Faculty. This will be achieved in a variety of ways, including the creation of minors offered to students from all grades, work on challenges and cases involving students from different grades, and so on. In addition, the College must be an integral part of the Faculty, articulating mechanisms for fruitful collaboration with alumni societies, the Centre for the Global Common Good and the School of Government and Leadership, among other institutions.
