About us

The CRUK Scotland Institute is a cancer research institute, situated in Glasgow with approximately 250 researchers split across 30 research groups consisting of PIs, postdoctoral scientists, PhD students and scientific officers. It is one of Europe's leading cancer research centres, supporting cutting-edge work into the molecular mechanisms of cancer development. As well as core support from Cancer Research UK, the Institute also receives an additional third of its total income from external grants and industry collaborations. It has an excellent reputation for fundamental cancer research, including world-class metabolism studies and renowned in vivo modelling of tumour growth and metastasis. Its research ethos is about excellence, honesty, openness, accountability, and integrity.

Project outline

The Advanced Technology Proteomics Facility develops and utilises various mass spectrometry (MS)-based platforms for the quantitative analysis of a wide range of biological samples, from single proteins to in-depth proteomes and PTMs of cells, tissues and body fluids. The group works with researchers to provide a new level of understanding in tumour biology and for biomarkers discovery.

You will operate our mass spectrometers (currently Q-Exactive HF, Orbitrap-Lumos, and soon one of the latest generation MS Instruments), HPLCs and AssayMAP Bravo and utilise various software packages (MaxQuant/Perseus, Spectronaut and Skyline) for data analysis. Supporting various cancer proteomics projects, you will liaise with personnel in research groups, carry out regular instrument maintenance, sample preparation and data analysis. The role includes using and developing MS and sample preparation methods.

You will have a relevant degree and strong laboratory skills. Experience working with sample preparation, Orbitrap mass spectrometer and LC in the proteomic field are essential. Knowledge of data analysis with the above software packages is desirable.

Excellent communication skills, enthusiasm and the ability to work well both independently and with the rest of the team in the facility, and in close collaboration and with scientists associated with the project are essential, as the role involves active interactions with research scientists and mass spectrometry users. You should be highly motivated and have good project management and organisational skills.
