Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU) is a distinctive, unique institution, rooted in the Liverpool City Region and with a global presence. Our students and staff, past, present, and future, are the beating heart of our city and can be found in every corner of every industry and community. We couldn’t exist anywhere else and have shaped the city in which we belong. Working with the people of Liverpool to improve lives and support communities is at the heart of why we were founded and why we exist today.

The post requires you to contribute to the academic work of the Liverpool School of Art & Design and participate in the academic life of the School, Faculty and University.

You will play a significant role in the development and delivery of Environmental Design within Architecture and Interior Architecture undergraduate programmes. This will include climate literacy, sustainable design principles and design for health and wellbeing. You will coordinate and deliver course content that includes: the principles and theories associated with visual, thermal and acoustic environments, the relationship between climate, built form, energy consumption and human well-being, and an understanding of building technologies, environmental design and construction methods in relation to the consideration of a sustainable environment.

Our architecture programmes are balanced to address the creative and technical demands of the profession. A broad education is offered within which students can develop diverse and creative approaches to design issues that explore and test resolutions in relation to contemporary and anticipated contextual issues.

Taught principally through a studio environment and underpinned by lectures and workshops, the over-arching ambition of our programmes is to create graduates with artistic flair, who are technically skilled and grounded in the demands of the professional role of an architect. The learning and teaching environment is progressively informed by research in pedagogy in the creative field. While teaching the curriculum, the programme also develops less tangible skills in students, like communication, presentation and self-motivation; a key ambition is to create independent thinkers, adept at resolving problems with creativity and originality.

The city of Liverpool is a vibrant place for students to study and supports our programmes as a hub for research and projects. There are opportunities for students to work with leading arts organisations and our programmes encourage collaborative, experimental, and creative practice.

The 2022 RIBA visiting panel commended the architecture staff for their collegiate approach to course delivery and strong commitment to the student experience. It also commended the school for its continuing civic engagement with the city region through strong links to its cultural institutions and the Architecture Programme’s focus on urban design projects across a range of scales.

Informal enquiries may be made to Dominic Wilkinson, Programme Leader d.e.wilkinson@ljmu.ac.uk.

In return, we offer an excellent benefits package including generous annual leave entitlement, pension scheme, induction and development support as well as family-friendly policies.

This is an exciting time to join the university as we deliver the LJMU Strategy 2030 and its vision of LJMU as an inclusive civic university transforming lives and futures, by placing students at the heart of everything we do.

If you feel that this is the role you have been looking for and your skills and experience can make a real difference at LJMU, we look forward to hearing from you.
