The Department of Electrical Engineering and Electronics has a proud track record for high quality research and industrial collaboration. There is world class expertise in renewable power, smart grid, condition monitoring and the design of high voltage apparatus. In the Research Excellence Framework (REF 2021) exercise, Liverpool’s engineering research ranked No. 6 across all UK universities in terms of research impact. The Impact Case Study based on the work from the Energy Technologies and Complex Systems research group has been deemed world-leading with the highest 4\* grade. The Group also produced internationally leading research outputs, including numerous highly cited papers.

The Energy Technology and Complex Systems research group is actively engaged in the global effort to tackle greenhouse gas emission in electrical grids to contribute toward the government’s Net Zero target. Digital Energy Systems is a key area of research within the Energy Technology and Complex Systems Group. Digital Energy leverages cutting-edge digital technologies, including data analytics, artificial intelligence (AI), and distributed ledger technology, to enhance the planning and operation of energy systems. These advancements are crucial for the transition to renewable energy and the development of smart grids in the modern era.

The Group is seeking to appoint a talented and enthusiastic researcher to carry out a critical part of the innovative research in the field of Digital Energy Systems. The project is sponsored by UKRI with the aim to conduct modelling, analysis and optimisation of smart power distribution grids and community energy systems. In collaboration with our industrial and UK university partners, a novel research programme will be implemented based on modelling, control, and optimisation of community energy systems.
