Overview

The School of Geography, Politics and Sociology at Newcastle University invites applications for a fully funded doctoral studentship on the theme ‘Geographies of refuge’. Supervised by Dr Malene H. Jacobsen (Geography), the successful candidate is expected to develop their own research project within this theme.  

We welcome applications from students who approach geographies of refuge from diverse geographical locations and theoretical perspectives, including decolonial and postcolonial theory, feminist theory, and/or critical race theory. 

Possible topics may include:  

  • Geographies of displacement and refuge 
  • (Geo)politics of refuge and/or asylum 
  • Coloniality, refuge, and state protection 
  • War, refuge and refugees 
  • Trajectories, embodiment and counter-topographies of refuge 
  • Geographies of activism, resistance, and solidarity 
  • Refuge, refugee politics and futures 
  • Law and legal geographies of asylum 
  • Testimony, memories and witnessing  
  • Temporalities of asylum and refuge 
  • Borders, boundaries and territoriality  
  • Displacement, refuge and diaspora 

Applications are welcomed from students of Geography, Gender Studies, Queer Studies, Critical Border Studies, Black Studies, Critical Refugee Studies, or other social sciences fields.

Eligibility criteria:

Essential:

  • This position is open to UK students and EU students with settled or pre-settled status.
  • Training and/or proven expertise in qualitative methodologies.
  • Demonstrated interest in, knowledge of, and/or commitment to decolonial and postcolonial theory, and/or feminist theory, and/or critical race theory.
  • Applicants whose first language is not English require an IELTS score of 7.0 overall with a minimum of 6.5 in all sub-skills.

Desirable:

  • Experience of conducting research at Master’s level.
  • Demonstrated interest in and/or knowledge of refuge and/or asylum.
  • Willingness to undertake fieldwork.
