Professor of Veterinary Primary Care Research and Practice

Harper & Keele Veterinary School

This research-focused role leads one of the three strategic themes at HKVS. We seek a health care professional with strong research focus and profile to lead and evolve this theme. The role offers the opportunity for senior leadership at the School including research directorship for a suitably qualified and experienced candidate.

The scholarship of primary care practice is currently under-represented in the veterinary professions. There is current professional focus on developing primary care specialism which HKVS is ideally placed to be a leader in. By directing resources to this area, we seek to pursue evidence-based approaches to building knowledge in current practice and to explore novel approaches to research and teaching.

Our community of clinical practice is predicated on excellence in primary care exemplified by the creation of Garden Vets at Keele, an independent primary care-led teaching hospital located in the HKVS building on the Keele University campus. Additionally, Consort E3, a digital learning facility, is integrated with the hospital and HKVS to provide a digital replica of the practice, where simulations can be run for training of staff, refinement of business and clinical operations, and in meeting our research and knowledge exchange commitments.

Our academic community and industry networks have a broad base of inter-professionalism and expertise in primary care, underpinned by data capabilities and digital technology. Close liaison with colleagues in cognate veterinary professions at Harper Adams University and the human health primary care disciplines at Keele University provides a rich and supportive collaborative environment for research and teaching.

The combination of these resources, environment and the data generated through primary veterinary care provide an ideal opportunity to engage in high quality practice-based research, and this role provides senior leadership of these endeavours.

This is an ideal opportunity for an experienced researcher in primary care practice to take on a more strategic leadership position in a new and thriving vet school.
