We are seeking an enthusiastic and experienced Laboratory Manager to join the team in the Dyson Centre for Engineering Design at the Department of Engineering's central Cambridge site. The Dyson Centre provides a modern workspace for engineering students to come together to think, exchange ideas, design, experiment, and build ¿ for major projects run through student societies, for students working independently, as well as for project work in all 4 years of the Engineering Tripos, and schools outreach activities. The Dyson Centre is the centre of gravity in the Department for student design-and-make activities, and a showcase for students' talents.
You will report to the Dyson Centre Manager and will lead a group of technicians in the area to provide support to the students on their extra-curricular projects, advising on design and manufacture, and providing hands-on training and guidance (including health and safety) on a wide range of equipment (including machine tools, rapid prototyping machines, CAD/CAM, and sheet metal fabrication)
We are hoping for a period of handover for the role, to allow the successful candidate to become fully familiar with the facilities provided by the Dyson Centre.
The successful candidate will have experience of managing specialised workshop activities, facilities and staff to support engineering research. You will have hands-on experience of instrument/equipment design machining/forming and assembly skills
You will be educated to degree level or a level 6 vocational qualification or have an equivalent level of practical experience. Knowledge of instrumentation, data logging systems and software e.g. LabVIEW and CAD/CAM would be desirable.
