Job Summary
We are looking to recruit a PDRA for a 15-month post on the computational modelling of contrails from SAF and H2 combustion. The project will investigate the interaction of turbulence with ice nucleation and growth leading to the formation of contrails. To this end, we will couple an LES/DNS CFD code with the population balance equation (PBE). The latter will be employed to predict the ice particle size distribution.
The post is part of a larger project that involves experimental research on contrails from SAF and H2 combustion, to be conducted also at Imperial College London, and also research on radiative forcing at the University of Leeds and on aviation policy at University College London (UCL). The present post will focus on the computational aspect of the work and comparison will be made against the experiments that will be conducted at ICL.
The candidate is expected to have a PhD in engineering or science with emphasis on numerical methods for fluid flows. Experience with programming and handling of in-house, parallelised, CFD codes is essential.
Duties and responsibilities
The PDRA will be involved in code development, high-performance computing simulations and writing research papers. They will interact with an interdisciplinary team from Imperial, UCL and Leeds, and will present their results at progress meetings and at international conferences.
Essential requirements
Those appointed at Research Associate level
Hold a PhD (or equivalent) in Engineering or a closely related discipline or equivalent research or industrial experience.
Those appointed at Research Assistant level
A first / Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Engineering or a closely related discipline or industrial experience.
*Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as Research Assistant.

The College believes that the use of animals in research is vital to improve human and animal health and welfare. Animals may only be used in research programmes where their use is shown to be necessary for developing new treatments and making medical advances. Imperial is committed to ensuring that, in cases where this research is deemed essential, all animals in the College’s care are treated with full respect, and that all staff involved with this work show due consideration at every level.
