We are seeking a Laboratory Technician to join the Rosalind Franklin Institute in a full-time capacity. You will join a team of support scientists to help maintain an excellent level of service across the Structural Biology laboratories of the Institute. Responsibilities will include fundamental aspects of laboratory support (ordering, waste management, media preparation etc.) as well as more specialist technical tasks (instrument maintenance, cell and tissue culture, chemical inventory, health, and safety documents reviews etc.) Appropriate training will be provided where relevant. Your work will help the institute deliver on its goal of world leading research in the physical and biological sciences.
Responsibilities
- Assisting with general laboratory operations including maintaining a clean, safe and well-stocked working environment.
- Safe disposal of laboratory waste, including operation of glass washing machines and autoclaves.
- Preparation of common laboratory materials (stock reagents and aliquots).
- Assist in maintenance of scientific equipment and assessment/procurement of new instrumentation.
- Writing and updating risk assessment (RA) and standard operating procedure (SOP) documents, and training users on safe and effective working.
- Maintain appropriate records of laboratory activities like safety documents and inventory system. Where required, provide data for/contribute to reporting including contributing to publications and scientific presentations.
- Support for basic protein purification activities.
- Regular lab tests like phage and mycoplasma testing.
- Freezer management and regular defrosting.
