Overview

The School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics at Oxford Brookes University seeks an independent and highly motivated candidate from a science / technology discipline. An excellent candidate will research innovative solutions to profound challenges in autonomous driving - in particular remote operation (teleoperation). 

Project Description

To develop a remote operation system for ‘out-of-vehicle’ control of an autonomous-ready delivery vehicle in association with Oxfordshire County Council and the GREENLog consortium, undertaking original research which may include; wireless communications, robotic systems integration, data collection, control systems, robot / vehicle communication systems (e.g. CANBus, ROS, SPI, I2C, Flexray etc) and hardware-in-loop testing. 

Oxford Brookes University has a world-leading Autonomous Driving and Intelligent Transport group (https://www.brookes.ac.uk/research/units/tde/groups/autonomous-driving-and-intelligent-transport). The MRes will be supported by our experts in AI, machine vision and robotics, supported by the newly-formed Institute for AI, Data Analysis, and Systems (AIDAS). 

Essential selection criteria include:

  • An upper second class degree in a Science or Technology discipline, or equivalent experience.
  • Experience in managing, processing, and analysing technical data.
  • Capability to work independently and within a team.
  • Good written and oral communication and organisational skills.
  • Passion for and commitment to research.

Desirable experience would include:

  • An interest in software engineering.
  • Potential to work in a senior position within a team to develop the vehicle control system.
  • Vehicular / robotics communication (e.g. CANBus / Flexray etc).
  • ROS middleware.
  • Software development / coding experience.
  • Low level communications (e.g. SPI / I2C etc).
  • Wireless networking & communications (e.g. 4/5g, WiFi etc).
  • Mobile robotics system integration.
  • Embedded software development.
  • Software engineering skills.

The successful candidate will:

  • Collaborate with students and staff across the School.
  • Carry out research on autonomous and/or remotely operated vehicles.
  • Oversee day-to-day operation of a small group of students working towards vehicle development, regular updates with academic staff, managing project resources.
  • Be responsible for coordinating and delivering an effective technology demonstrator for last-mile logistics.
  • Participate in research meetings and undertake supplementary research training.
  • Receive training and mentoring to develop leadership skills.
