Scientific Software Engineer / Senior

Salary: £42,840 -£47,124 / £53,818 - £59,199 (Senior) depending on experience and skill set

Hours: Full time or Part time 

Contract Type: 2 Years 

Location: Science and Technology Facilities Council, Rutherford Appleton Laboratory Harwell, Oxfordshire. Hybrid Working from locations in the UK also available.

You will work on the software package SpinW (https://github.com/SpinW/spinw), which is used to simulate the magnetic dynamics of ordered magnetic materials and determine the spin exchange interactions by fitting to inelastic neutron scattering data. 

If you are a research software engineer, scientist with strong programming skills, or software engineer with a strong technical or scientific background this role would offer you a great opportunity to work in a high-level research environment, with the chance to learn from and work together with scientists, researchers and software developers with a variety of backgrounds and skills. 

The role may include occasional UK and overseas travel, including to the Paul Scherrer Institut (PSI) in Switzerland.

About you  

At a minimum you will have: 

• Degree or equivalent experience in a STEM subject, with significant focus on software development 
• Experience of object-oriented programming using Python
• Experience in professional development practices such as version control, writing unit tests, continuous integration, agile practice.
• Experience in software design/development, such as design patterns, CI/CD, performance/benchmarking etc.
• Good verbal and written communication skills in English, including the ability to explain technical concepts effectively. 
• Ability to work independently and within a dynamic, agile team environment. 
• Good analytical skills with a logical approach to problem solving.
