Merton College proposes to appoint a Stipendiary Lecturer in English Literature for the period 1 October 2024 until 30 September 2026.
The main duties of the post will be: to teach undergraduates reading English Language and Literature for up to four hours per week in full term, to share in the organisational responsibility and administration of English and Joint Degrees with English in the College, to act as Director of Studies for a number of first-year students studying English, to provide study skills and pastoral support, and to take part in the undergraduate admissions exercise.
The successful candidate will be able to teach first-year (Prelims) paper 3 (Literature in English, 1830-1910) and paper 4 (Literature in English, 1910-present) for undergraduates studying English. They will have completed, or be about to complete, a doctorate in English Literature in a topic relevant to this teaching range. The ability to provide effective tutorial teaching to high-achieving undergraduates is essential.
