Are you interested in working on a project investigating the role of infrastructure in the urbanization process? We are seeking applications from experienced, motivated individuals able to develop new ideas and knowledge into the emerging geography of infrastructure corridors and implications for urban inequalities.

We are seeking an individual to join a team led by Dr Jonathan Silver on the European Research Council funded project – GlobalCORRIDOR – based at the Urban Institute. The job will suit a researcher with an emerging track record of research and publication in urban studies. You should have a PhD or equivalent experience in a relevant subject area (for example: human geography, urban planning, development studies, sociology). You will work with the team to consolidate, explore and expand the idea of ‘Corridor Urbanization’.

Why Corridor Urbanization?  The 21st century has witnessed an intensifying investment into the infrastructures required for new trade routes that cut across cities, countries and regions as they seek to materially integrate into specific accumulation regimes, historical conditions and geographical context. This proliferation of infrastructure corridors is generating new urbanization patterns across diverse territories with important implications for urban, regional and global futures. However, the ways in which these infrastructural-led transformations are remaking urban worlds, potentially in highly unequal ways, has yet to be comprehensively explored from an urban geography/planning perspective.

The PDRA will have highly specialised skills to help us develop a database and atlas of infrastructure projects, undertake desk-based interviews with mainly Chinese based infrastructure actors, advance urban studies literature through co-authored outputs, as well as organise and conduct potential fieldwork in East Africa with a focus on Chinese investments in the region.
