Senior Lecturer/Lecturer in Museum Studies

Applications are invited for appointment as Senior Lecturer/Lecturer in Museum Studies in the Faculty of Arts, in collaboration with the University Museum and Art Gallery (UMAG) (Ref.: 526875), to commence on August 19, 2024 or as soon as possible thereafter, on a two-year fixed-term basis, with the possibility of renewal subject to performance and availability of funding.

Applicants should possess a Ph.D. in Archaeology, Conservation Science, Art History, or Museum Studies, with strong training in one of the physical sciences, and idealy have at least 5 years of experience in the practice and theory of art conservation and/or the teaching of material science. The applicants are expected to have taught undergraduate and/or postgraduate students in one or more of the following areas: art conservation, collection registration, archiving, and public outreach. Personal experience in making the above-mentioned topics part of museum education, a knowledge of the Hong Kong art scene, as well as possessing a knowledge of international standards in conservation and archival preservation is an advantage. A team spirit and highly developed communication skills are a must. Preference will be given to candidates who have international contacts in museums and conservation research institutes, have published and presented their research internationally and/or have successfully applied for research and/or teaching grants, and, ideally, have experience developing a new academic programme.

The appointee is expected to assist the Faculty in building up its newly designed postgraduate programme for Museum Studies e.g. develop new courses, design original teaching materials and various procedures of assessment etc. He/She is also expected to teach a range of courses in Museum Studies primarily at postgraduate level, supervise capstone projects, support internship and co-curricular activities, and undertake administrative responsibilities for the new postgraduate programme.

A highly competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience will be offered, together with contract-end gratuity and University contribution to a retirement benefits scheme at 15% of basic salary.
