University of Macau - University Library

The University of Macau (UM) is an internationalized public comprehensive university in the Macao Special Administrative Region (MSAR) located at the west bank of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA). The GBA is rapidly developing into one of the leading technology and innovation hubs of the world. UM is placed No. 193 in the THE World University Rankings and placed No. 254 in the QS World University Rankings. With a scenic campus of approximately 1 km2 on Hengqin island, UM has achieved significant progress in the past decade as evidenced by its rising international repute, state-of-the-art teaching and research facilities, and the establishment of three State Key Laboratories in microelectronics, Chinese medical sciences, and internet of things for smart city. The University Library

Standing at the forefront and occupying the central location of the campus, the University Library is the landmark building of the UM campus. The University Library is a magnificent building of 30,000 square meters, seating for 3,000, and a capacity of more than one million volumes of hard copy books. With over 40 years of development, the University Library has become the largest library in Macao. At this moment, the University Library holds a collection of over 12 million pieces/items, including books, periodicals, AV materials, paintings, antiques, microfilms, etc. With the rapid development of web services, the University Library has acquired quite a number of electronic resources, such as e-databases, e-books, e-theses, e-newspapers and e-journals. 

The University Library’s major functions include providing reference books, academic journals and electronic information networks and electronic database necessary for the teaching, research, and services of UM; collecting, preserving, organizing and developing UM’s academic resources; providing appropriate space, environment and professional guidance to support the overall development of UM; and serving as an information and cultural centre for the entire campus to cultivate artistic and cultural ambiance at UM. The University Librarian

The University Librarian leads the overall operation and management of the University Library. Directly reporting to the Vice Rector (Global Affairs), he/she is responsible for overseeing and coordinating all aspects related to the University Library, including: (a) developing, monitoring and reviewing the strategic direction of library functions; (b) planning and managing library resources, services and facilities for the University; (c) providing oversight of all library policies and operations including the development of working manuals; (d) applying information technology to library functions including the on-line delivery of data-bases and library resources; (e) contributing to scholarship pertaining to librarianship, and, in other academic disciplines in collaboration with academics at the University and in the international community; (f) overseeing the development and preservation of historical materials in the University Gallery; (g) planning and managing staff and financial resources; and (h) developing and implementing regional and international library collaborative projects. 

In particular, the candidates should have the following credentials:

  1. Bachelor’s degree or above in Library Science or related disciplines, highly preferably with a PhD degree;
  2. At least 10 years of substantial working experience in library or equivalent capacity, such as academic or research experience in library-related discipline;
  3. Knowledge and hands-on integration of the use of information technologies into library services;
  4. Demonstrated experience in leading and managing a large academic library, and familiarity with the operation of library consortia, well-connected with the regional and international library community;
  5. Strong experience in general administration and management, excellent communication and problem-solving skills, self-motivated, analytical and creative;
  6. Proficiency in English and Chinese, while knowledge in Portuguese will be an advantage. 

Remuneration

Remuneration will be commensurate with the successful applicants’ academic qualification and relevant professional experience. The current local maximum income tax rate is 12% but is effectively around 5% - 7% after various discretionary exemptions.
