We seek to appoint a full-time permanent lectureship in Invertebrate Palaeontology that complements and/or extends our existing strengths. The post will be held jointly between the Department of Earth Sciences (ES) and the Department of Genetics, Evolution and Environment (GEE). The post-holder will be part of the Centre for Life’s Evolution and Environment (CLOE). The successful candidate will complement and build on ties between these departments by enhancing our existing research and teaching strengths in evolution and palaeontology. You will have expertise in the general field of invertebrate palaeontology, specifically at the interface of zoology and palaeontology. Candidates will have research interests that focus on aspects of the evolution of animals in areas including, but not restricted to: 

  • Fossil evidence regarding animal phylogeny, the origins of key animal innovations and ecosystem developments.
  • Geoenvironmental context of animal evolution and extinction in deep time.
  • Patterns of diversity through earth history.
  • Causes and consequences of rapid radiation / extinction events.
  • Extant taxa in the context of animal phylogeny and the fossil record. 

We encourage applicants with research fieldwork programmes, research combining studies of fossil and extant life (including genomics and developmental biology) and applications of novel approaches for studying fossils including CT and Synchrotron imaging. 

The successful candidate will be expected to pursue research of international quality and to provide academic leadership in the development of their subject area. Candidates are expected to be a highly motivated, aiming to build their career at one of the world’s top universities. It is also expected that the post-holder will contribute to all aspects of the academic life of the host Departments and College including teaching and enabling.

The successful applicant will have a growing track record of funded, excellent research with the potential to make substantial contributions to their chosen field. They will be expected to lead and maintain funding for a world-class research programme and to supervise and mentor postdoctoral and PhD researchers. They will be able to provide evidence that their educational work is held in high esteem and be expected to further develop and maintain an excellent teaching profile. This includes development of curricula or teaching methodologies, achieving Faculty/institutional goals. 

You must have a PhD or equivalent in a relevant subject area (must have been awarded by the time of submission of the application for the posts) and proven knowledge of invertebrate palaeontology as evidenced through significant and novel research reflected in the authorship of high-quality publications and/or other research outputs. 

Experience in the effective supervision and mentoring of PhD and/or masters students and research-based teaching at undergraduate or postgraduate levels are also desirable.
