Job Summary
Applications are encouraged for two Research Fellow positions to participate in the new research strategy that is currently being developed within the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. We are recruiting for two new members of staff to join a small cohort of Departmental Research Fellows that carry out independent research. You will support the development of new research programmes and proposals related to one or more of the following research theme areas, and undertake elements of related teaching:

  • Resilient and secure built environment,
  • Connected efficient cities,
  • Engineering net zero and beyond,
  • Sustainable natural environment.

Duties and responsibilities
Your role will be to conduct research in your area and to work collaboratively within at least one research theme with academic, research, and professional services staff to establish research programmes within that theme. As well as being able to lead the planning and delivery of independent research in collaboration with the Director of Research and Theme Leads, you will be expected to identify gaps and research opportunities aligned with both the Department’s portfolio of research activities and broader industrial needs. In addition, your role might involve supporting existing initiatives, organising workshops, proposal development and writing. You will also take on limited teaching responsibilities., e.g. to contribute time to existing courses or to embed teaching on the research area into the existing syllabus.

Essential requirements

  • PhD in Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science or a closely related field relevant to Civil and Environmental Engineering, or equivalent research, industrial or commercial experience,
  • Knowledge of research methods and statistical procedures,
  • A record of high-quality publications in international peer-reviewed journals
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to deal with a wide range of people,
  • Willingness to work as part of a team and to be open-minded and cooperative.
