Are you someone who enjoys working as part of a large, busy team and would like to join the Technical Services Group at the University?

We currently have an exciting opportunity for a Technical Specialist to assist the School’s Health and Safety Executive to ensure compliance and safe practices are met in a wide variety of technical settings.

Main duties and responsibilities 

The successful applicant must be able to provide advice to staff and students in the School on matters of health, safety, and regulatory compliance within the laboratories run by the School, whilst assisting in the further development of Health and Safety policy within the technical labs and workshops. 

You will be responsible for the preparation of materials and equipment for practical, commercial and short course classes as required in one or more areas of the school. This will involve support for specialist techniques in a laboratory/workshop environment area for both undergraduate and postgraduate students and occasional support in other areas within the school. Assist with the assessment of health and safety risks and the identification of reasonably practical control measures. 

The role will also require you to keep up to date with current Health and Safety related legislation and work closely with the wider University of Hertfordshire safety team. In addition to this, you must have a thorough knowledge of the relevant safety procedures applicable to laboratories and workshops, whilst ensuring these procedures are adhered to by all users.

Skills and experience   

You will be required to have considerable practical experience working in a laboratory in a relevant subject, e.g. Chemistry, Biology, STEM in a technical role. You will have experience in the completion of COSHH Risk Assessments and Health and Safety management in a subject relevant to STEM. Experience as a Trainer would also be desirable.

Ideally, you will have previous customer service experience along with strong IT skills. Excellent verbal and written communication skills are essential. In addition, you will have a good understanding of customer care and the ability to put this into practice.

You will need to demonstrate strong attention to detail and have good organisational and interpersonal skills.

Qualifications required

Minimum of a Degree in STEM, Chemistry, Biology subject or related subject or equivalent work experience.

The University is required to meet UKVI visa regulations and we are not able to sponsor for this position. Applicants who do not currently have the right to work in the UK will have to satisfy UKVI regulations before they can be appointed. You must have been a UK/EEA/EU resident for the last 3 years.
