The opportunity

University of the Arts London (UAL) is looking for a Lecturer in Contextual and Theoretical Studies to join us on a part time basis.

Contextual and Theoretical Studies (CTS) occupy a central position across the Design School at LCC and underpin all UG courses with a framework of critical, contextual and theoretical thinking which supports students in becoming confident in the research, analysis, critique and presentation of knowledge linked to their emerging design interests.

You will work collaboratively with course teams to deliver CTS in an embedded framework, deploying specialist expertise to develop pedagogy and the curriculum that connects critical thinking with design practice. You’ll also be responsible for pastoral support of a group of students. A collaborative approach to teaching at the intersection of theory and practice is essential to this role.

Working as part of a vibrant and research-focused team, you’ll undertake teaching, curriculum development, administration and assessment of units, as well as on-going scholarship within a programme. Reporting to the CTS Coordinator, you will work collaboratively with UG course leaders and lecturers, as well as administrative and academic support staff.

The role offers an exciting opportunity to take an active role in the development of the CTS curriculum as the Design School works on interconnecting theory and practice across different design disciplines. The curriculum seeks to embed key principles and shared values centred on climate, racial and social justice, as suggested by the Responsible Design Framework.

About you

You’ll be someone who can combine teaching and assessment experience at Higher Education level with knowledge and critical understanding of the social, cultural, environmental, political and economic issues that shape contemporary design practices and theoretical discourses. You’ll have a background in design history, material or visual culture studies, or associated fields. You’ll have specialist expertise in one of the following design areas: graphic design history and theory, branding history and theory, illustration history and theory.

You’ll be able to apply innovative digital approaches to teaching and learning and be able to apply your own research, including pedagogic research, to the development of learning and assessment practice and innovative approaches to course development and delivery. You’ll have an ability to communicate, collaborate and work within teams across different professional groups.
